Legislation Legacy Susan Rodgers University of Phoenix-Axia College ETH/125 A current issue facing Native Americans today is the investment of federal money into the tribal sovereignty and the right of self-determination. These federal investments go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs for allocation to the proper service. And all services are in need of a higher investment than what has been given in the past. This money is to be used for services such as – safety and justice, education, health care and social services, and agriculture, just to name a few. The legislation for the federal investments into the communities of the Native Americans dates back to the original treaties between the government and the tribes. The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) provides samples of these treaties in their final budget report for FY 2010. One such sample is from the Treaty with the Navajo dated June 1, 1868. Unformatted text preview: the United States agrees that for every thirty children between said ages who can be induced or compelled to attend school, a house shall be provided, and a teacher competent to teach elementary branches of an English education shall be furnished, who shall reside among said Indians, and faithfully discharge his or her duties as a teacher.” The final budget report is asking for an increase in the federal government’s investment. To determine if the tribes will receive the extra money the government will use the percentage of inflation and the per capita income rate of the population of the whole United States. In my opinion, the government should base this increase on the inflation rate and per capital income rate of Native Americans. I believe this is the only way for the government to correct the damage done by years of broken promises....
