Week 5 CheckPoint 1: Understanding Arab and Muslim Americans In Racial and Ethnic Groups, the difference between Arab Americans and Muslim Americans is Arab is an ethnic group like French or American, and Muslim is a religious group like Christian or Jewish. An Arab is a person or a descendant of a person for an Arab country such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, or Egypt. A Muslim is a person who is a believer in the faith Islam. Just because a person is Arabian does not mean he or she is Muslim. Because some people do not make that distinction Arab Americans have had to deal with the backlash of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. After 9/11 the government implemented the USA Patriot Act. Although it was meant to protect the country from all attackers of any nationality, it has been said that the Patriot Act is the cause of the rise of fear against Arab and Muslim Americans. The Patriot Act does have a clause discouraging discrimination against ethnic groups. However, this has not stopped the racial profiling done by our government. The
