(what do we know of the speaker strictly form the document, what do we know from the metadata, what do we know from further research?) Richard Frethorne is the speaker of this story. This unfortunate man was one of the many men who set sail to Jamestown via England. This document is primarily based on a gloomy, yet a somewhat optimistic letter to his father and mother. 5. What is the Occasion ? (Time period, historical significance, other contemporary events) Richard Frethorne is one of the men who set sail for Jamestown as an expedition organized by the Virginia Company.
