When they initially started the Patient Self- Determination Act the purpose of it was to make sure everyone coming into the health care facility is informed of consent. This information was about their rights and making sure everyone is being informed of that state’s regulations and how they impact them legally when it comes to the choices they have made concerning health care. It is required that all health care inform their patients that are 18 years and older about their rights to have an advance directive in their medical records. The advance directives consist of many things and some of them are Medical powers of attorney, Living wills, and health care proxy. The patients have to receive the information in writing telling them about the laws in that state and it has to come from the facility in which they are getting treatment.
