Sabine Justilien However misleading the title of the French and Indian War is, it undoubtedly played a major role in the change in relationship between policy in the Empire and the Colony. The Great Awakening is seen as the inspiration for the idea that government can be challenged because it was there to serve the people. As more immigrants arrived, the need for expansion was ever present, thus infringing on the boundaries set up by the illustrious French and Indian fur trade. By 1700, 1 million British settlers arrived to North America seeking farmland away from the Atlantic Coast and west towards the Ohio River. As the settlers moved farther west, the merchants, land speculators and settlers asked the government to get rid of the French so they could begin their business. By the early to mid 1750s, the Indians began attacking the British to keep them from traveling further. In retaliation, Pitts sends 23,000 soldiers that would work alongside the American settlers in 1757, who were to be paid at the end of their service, to dispose of the
