HIS103, Monday, May 30, 2011 - Louis 14 th – I am the state, went after improving northern borders of France - War of Devolution/Dutch War both with objective of improving that territory - Moving further from Paris eastward - France called arbiter of Europe at this point o Language of diplomacy changes, from Latin to France - League of Augsburg created to prevent the takeover of German lands, even Emperor Leopold signed on o Capture of Strasburg produced this - Louis, to make sure Austrians would not pose a challenge to all this gains, moved away from diplomacy to use of force - Sept 24 th , 1688 launched major attack against last major crossing point across the Rhine, a city called Philipsburg o Started 9 Years War, a major miscalculation o Resentment towards France based on previous actions o Willingness of opponents to work together o Speed with which they would launch a counterattack - From this point French foreign policy will change and the British will become the target o Will last for more than a century, start of 9 years war - Military success may be great, but counterbalanced by political failure o Wanted to discourage a coalition but produced absolutely the opposite of that o
