HIS103, HIS103, Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - Treaty of Utrech – Checks and Balances built into the system - Triple alliance, Barrier Treaty - Dramatic upheaval in Europe based on one state’s desire, a 2 nd rank state- Prussia o Prussia is fragmented, Main territories East/West Prussia separated o Need compact territory to be able to better defend, run and administer o Treaty of Al-ashapel - Great deal of animosity between Habsburg and Prussia - Britain does not care for Austrian national interest - Maria Theresa also came to recognize a dramatic change in Austria national priorities: No longer did Bourbon France present that much of an issue to Austria - Declining, if not stagnating, does not present same military power - No longer the greatest threat to Austria or Habsburg stability - Not even Spain even though they are attempting to claim territory - Heretic Protestant Prussia presents as the most important opponent - These proposal, ideas came from Maria’s own chancellor o Lands that received in treaty of Utrech were not an asset to the Austrian empire, but a liability o Had a hard time defending those territories, let alone fully utilizing
