22:07 HIS103 – Monday July 25 th  2011 Eve of the first world war All sides through it would be quick, easy war, mobile war of defenses  Further diplomatic action between the great powers  Central Powers, Triple Entente Couldn’t find antidote to machine gun, thought only way they could win was by  bringing in more weapons etc  Very short sighted, no state had a long term war plan  No long term planning what to do, after war is won, what to do with boarders etc  Best example is Franco-Russian alliance, been in existence for 23 years  Commanders of the two armies never sat down to see each other’s plans and to  coordinate action  No Military cooperation, no political plans  German and the Austrians did the same thing  My Sept Germans in the heartland of France, Russians blamed for not doing  enough to save France  Russians lost half mill soldiers  End of mobile war, war of attrition takes place  When military representatives met, agreed to no separate peace with German,  nobody would impose conditions on Germany without agreements with others  Russian found greatest difficulty fighting Germany is lack of supplies, poorly  developed state, only way to fight is by receiving western supplies  1
