Lecture I– The Origins of Life I I. Early Earth Conditions A. Time-line of earth formation 4.6 BYA sun and planets formed 4.6-3.9 BYA Meteoritic bombardment and heavy volcanic activity 3.9 BYA onwards: Reducing atmosphere (high in hydrogen content, no free oxygen; thick with H2O vapor, CO2, CO, CH4, NH3, H, etc.). B. Reducing atmosphere As earth cooled, H2O vapor condensed into oceans; hydrogen escaped into space, and life began! II. How Did Life Start A. Origin of life outline, “From organics to cells” Organic molecules formed only by organic life Inorganic molecules lead to organic molecules 1. Abiotic synthesis of simple organic molecules a. Miller/ Urey experiments Oparin-Haldane Hypothesis:reducing atmosphere facilitates organic molecule formation Test:Miller and Urey constructed early earth atmosphere. Results:Formation of organic compounds. Caveat:Evidence suggests atmosphere (on average) was not a reducing environment.
