This Appendix presents a derivation of a method based on polynomial roots for determining the local minimum-pressure ( P min ) and local maximum-pressure ( P max ) of the Peng-Robinson EOS along an isotherm. These pressures and their corresponding molar volumes ( V min and V max , respectively) are illustrated in the figure below. Note that such local extrema are only possible for temperatures T < T c . Furthermore, the extrema do not exist at pressures P < P min ( T ) . The two local extreme pressures can be used to generate an initial guess for the saturation pressure P guess sat ( T ) at the temperature T , as follows:
