Rakes Office: 1009 Pamplin Hall Phone: 231-4636 Email: [email protected] Web page: Scholar: https://learn.vt.edu Office Hours: Mon-Fri from 9:30 to 10:30 AM or by appointment Course Description BIT 2405 is designed to provide an introduction to the concepts and applications of statistics in managerial decision-making. The topics we will cover include data collection, descriptive statistics, probability theory, sampling distributions, and statistical inference. Course Objectives This course is an opportunity for you to gain 1. An understanding of how to summarize, display, and interpret large amounts of data 2. An understanding of how to use and understand inferential statistics 3. Skills for recognizing misuse of statistics 4. Confidence in working with numbers 5. Experience using Excel for statistical analysis Prerequisites ACIS 1504, Math 1525, Math 1526 or an equivalent sequence COURSE MATERIALS 1) Required Textbook Quantitative Methods I, BIT 2405, Virginia Tech by Anderson/Sweeney/Williams (Cengage Learning, 2008) 2) Required Software : Hawkes Learning Systems: Statistics Fall 2009 Version (PC only , no MAC version available) Adobe Acrobat Reader, Version 8.0 or higher Microsoft Internet Explorer Microsoft Excel 2007 You must download the Hawkes Learning Systems: Statistics software from http://www.hawkeslearning.com/PC_downloads.htm by choosing “Statistics” from the drop-down menu (be sure not to select “Business Statistics”). This software is not available at any of the bookstores. Once you download the software, you will need to purchase your access code from Hawkes Learning Systems via the web, using the following steps:

BIT 2405 – Virginia Tech Go to www.hawkeslearning.com Click on the link “get your access code” Click on the link “purchase an Access Code online” You will then go to the dropdown menu, titled “Hawkes Learning Systems Title” and select “Statistics” Click Next Continue with the payment method and your access code will be emailed to you. 3) Computer Equipment : You must have ready access to a computer that meets the recommended PC configuration for students entering the Pamplin College of Business. A printer and Internet access are required. 4) A Calculator: You should bring a calculator to class every class meeting. Grading 20% HLSSTAT assignments (Refer to the due dates on the “Schedule” document) 5% Quizzes/In-class work 25% Exam 1 25% Exam 2 25% Final Exam 3 GRADING SCALE Final grades will be assigned based on the following scale: A 93 – 100 A- 90 – 92 B+ 87 – 89 B 83 – 86 B- 80 – 82
