Course Description This course introduces the laws and regulations that are relevant to the functioning of businesses, along with an analysis of the legal system which provides a forum for such laws enforcement and the resolution of disputes. This body of law is often too narrowly summed up as “business law.” This is because “business law” encompasses all law that concerns the operation of business, and therefore includes everything from contracts to administrative law. In light of the time restraints and the plethora of information that we could cover, we will focus on those areas of business law that are both important to you as future professionals and interesting to you as students. In this course, one will: 1. Gain basic knowledge about law and the legal system; 2. Apply legal principals to fact scenarios; 3. Exercise critical thinking skills; and 4. Develop decision making and analytical skills. Class Expectations The class format will be a combination of lecture and discussion. I respect your abilities and intelligence, and will try not to needlessly repeat information that you can read in the textbook. However, I will highlight principals of law that are in the textbook and expand upon legal doctrines. This means that you are still responsible for information in the book that is not specifically discussed in class and for material discussed in class that may not be in the book. I also expect you to volunteer ideas and raise questions to further explore the material. This will assist me in probing your understanding and comfort with the material while increasing your own understanding through active learning.
