The integral solution and a chart of 10 the errors associate with performing relatively small wear 11 track experiments are given. The error is shown to be less 12 than 10% soon after the wear track diameter becomes 13 greater than the wear track width. 14 15 Keywords Uncertainty ± Pin-on-Disk ± Tribometers 16 Recently, it has become desirable to perform tight radius of 17 wear track experiments to support modern scanning spec- 18 troscopy experiments [ 1 3 ]. Numerous experiments and 19 models of uncertainties have been performed on pin-on- 20 disk tribometers [ 4 , 5 ], but the error associated with small 21 wear tracks has either been ignored or assumed to be 22 negligible. It should also be noted that the majority of the 23 small wear-track experiments are performed under recip- 24 rocating contacts [ 2 , 3 , 6 ] where such errors are not present. 25 The popularity of small reciprocating tribometers is due, 26 in-part, to the perception that the errors associated with 27 small wear tracks are large.
