The first thing that needs to be done during a patients visit is to pre-register the patient. During this step appointments need to be updated or scheduled. Information about insurance and the reason for the medical visit also need to be collected to insure a successful visit. If the appointment is for a new patient the personal information and insurance information should also be obtained. The second step needed to be done during the visit is to make the financial responsibilities known. You also need to make sure that you establish what is covered and what is not covered by the patients insurance and how or if and what the patients is responsible for payment of during the visit. The health care plan of the patient needs to be checked to see if the procedure being provided is covered. The patient’s eligibility and any needs for preauthorization of visits, tests, and\or medication needs to be checked. If there is an area of the visit that occurred that is not covered or completely covered then the payment process for the charge
