THE PREVALENCE OF SELFIES AMONG THE GENERAL POPULATION 2 Abstract The research seeks to determine the prevalence of selfies among the general population. The research identifies the different types of selfies and the type of selfies that are prevalent among the general population. For this purpose, the study uses data from a social media platform with a significant number of users. The research uses data from Facebook to determine the types of selfies that are prevalent among the users of the social media platform. The users of Facebook represented the general population. The results of the study indicated that the most prevalent type of selfies is group selfies. From the data, most Facebook users posted selfies at restaurants and movie theatres. Restaurants and movie theatres are places most visited by couples or friends. From the data, 80% of the population posted selfies from restaurants and movie theatres. The rest of the users of the social media platform posted selfies from hotels and fitness places. Hotels and fitness places are places where people normally visit alone. This means that a smaller percentage of the population, 20%, post selfies alone. The study concluded that the most prevalent type of selfies is the group selfies.

The most common device that individuals use to take a selfie is the phone camera. Taking selfies by individuals has become a major issue in this millennial era (Puiu, 2019). The selfie gets taken by the individuals mainly for the purposes of posting them to social media. Selfies could get taken by an individual alone, with friends or with romantic partners. Some selfies are also taken by individuals while they are in the process of engaging in special activities. Some of the selfies taken, especially by younger women, are seductive in nature. Since the year 2012, the process of taking selfies has become a focus for various researchers. The increasing phenomenon of selfies since 2013 has become an interesting topic. This is because, since the year 2013, the use of selfies worldwide increased by 17,000 % (Bennet, 2014). People now take the selfies in parties, in classes, taking lunch or dinner, at the offices, or at the gym (Keenan, 2014). People take selfies everywhere, even while driving. The
