Production Orientation The production orientation philosophy centers on the internal capabilities of a company rather than the needs and wants of the marketplace. This philosophy is essentially based on the premise that production of a product will lead to demand for that product. In other words, production is not based upon the needs of the marketplace, which is a potential problem with this type of philosophy. Apple is perhaps the best current example of a company that has successfully utilized a production orientation. The production of the iPod and iPhone did indeed lead to demand for those products and Apple’s production philosophy has helped to make them the largest technology company in the world. Sales Orientation A sales orientation philosophy is predicated upon the notion that individuals will buy more goods and services if aggressive sales practices are followed and furthermore, that high sales ultimately produce high profits. Like a production orientation, a sales orientation lacks a comprehension of the needs and wants of the marketplace.
