1. Technological factors are at the heart of the video game industry as the development of new technologies is largely what determines competitive advantage. For example, the motion-sensing technology used in the Nintendo Wii is what made the Wii the #1 selling console in the industry. Although such major technological innovations are few and far between within the gaming industry, the industry still moves at a very rapid pace. Online gaming has become immensely popular and consequently, software developers are under constant pressure to come up with new products to maintain profits and market share. They have to keep up with the latest technological trends and develop new products for these continually emerging new platforms (e.g. iPhones, Droids). Downloadable content means that gamers want and expect new releases often and with so many releases, it becomes difficult to maintain the interest of gamers. In these cases, developers must come up with other ways to entice them which in some cases may include sexual or violent content. In terms of social factors, the video game industry is often faced with a bit of a dilemma. Most gamers see video games as a way to escape and immerse themselves in a world of fantasy. They are often looking for excitement or a way to safely release pent up aggression.
