The internet has had a significant impact upon the wholesaling, retailing, and direct marketing environments. Online shopping offers consumers a wider selection products and usually at a lower price. Customers can also choose from a wider selection of merchants, including international merchants in many cases, and compare price and service within minutes. This has encouraged many organizations to offer more competitive pricing and services in order to survive. Also, consumers can shop from the comfort of their chair, regardless of where they live, what time of day it is, or what the day of the year it is. As an added bonus, this likely increases the odds of consumers making impulse buys. According to the textbook, online sales accounted for approximately 8 percent of all retail sales at the time of publication and I can only imagine that number has increased significantly since that time.
