There are rebates for all sorts of products, from cereal to computer hard drives to automobiles. I think that rebates are an effective enticement to purchase, but not nearly as effective as an instant discount. Rebates lower the final price of the product and thus can provide a good incentive to purchase a product, especially if the amount of the rebate is significant. However, any savvy consumer knows that rebates are a huge gamble.

The consumer often has to repeatedly contact the rebate company in order to keep the rebate process moving along, at which point the rebate itself starts to lose some of its value as more time is invested in the process. Thus, I think they are probably a far better incentive to purchase for those who have little experience with them....
