Childhood Mental Issues 10-4-10 ADD-ADHD: Chronic when it comes to staying on task High % of children have this illness More boys than girls Leading cause of referrals to mental health professional, school counselor, as well as juvenile center Special Education programs Overactive, can’t pay attention, can’t stay on task Tend to be impulsive and accident prone. o Blurs out answers before raising their hands o Forget things, forgetful o Squirms, talks too loud o Easily distracted Might not exhibit these symptoms at home, need structure environment Need something that catches their attention so they can stay on task Problems without diagnosing it early: o Bad, lazy, powerless to do any better REQUIREMENTS: o Structure environment o Do one or two steps at a time o Release their extra energy with a squeeze ball o Low noise o Decrease stimulus Asperger’s Syndrome: Has been around since the 1940 before the term “highly functioning autistic” was used
