In the 1800’s the country that we know as the United States looked much different. In the early 1800’ the area that makes up the western United States was owned by Mexico. Mexico declared its independence in 1821 (Encyclopedia of the United States, 2000) which left California with reduced support and representation from the Mexican government. Because of the changes that took place in the early 1800’s Mexican Americans were created. There were many Mexicans that migrated south but some stayed in the area of California which became a U.S. state in 1850. As California was introduced as the thirty first state Mexican Americans were becoming their own minority group. Prior to California’s state hood there was a discovery of gold which brought many European Americans to the area known as the California Republic. The sudden influx of European Americans over took the Mexican dominated area and forced the emigration of the existing people there. Most of what later became Mexican Americans began to emigrate back to Mexico. Because of the gold rush many European Americans created cities
