1 The West and The Rest .” – dominant distinction that has haunted the world since the 17th century and informs how race works as a cultural concept today. • “West” – more an idea (a concept), than a fact of geography . – refers to geography, but also… – to a type of society, a level of development, a form of governance, a social order. as a concept, “the West” 1. characterizes and classifies societies into different categories 2. calls up to the mind’s eye a picture of what different societies, cultures, people, and places are in a system 3. provides a standard or model of comparison. 4. provides criteria for evaluation against which other societies are ranked and around which powerful positive and negative feelings cluster. Why do we care? • Idea of “the West” does not simply reflect an already-established Western society. – rather, the idea of “the Rest” was essential to the very formation of the West. • The creation of the Rest was absolutely crucial
