Soil Classification Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to learn about soil classification and hence to determine the classification of six soil samples that I was presented with. Introduction: The main goal of the experiment was to identify six different mystery bags of soils. The soils ranged from a very dark brown soil mix with very fine particles to a bag that was filled with a white crystalline substance to a bag of brown rather large particles. There were several test that we used to help us in determining the composition of the soils. Equipment: Bags of mystery soils – 6 Small plastic beakers – 1 Bucket of water – 1 Plastic spray bottle – 1 Test Conditions: The experiment was performed in the class room around 75 degrees Fahrenheit and at one atmospheric pressure. Procedures: 1. Lay out a large sheet of butcher paper over the table to help keep the work area clean. 2. collect all necessary materials including the mystery bags of soil. 3.
