Helen Levitt, a major photographer of the 20th century, is famous for her photographs of children living their zesty, improvised lives. Among her masterpieces is "playing children" which was taken in her native New York in 1960. The photo shows a white girl and a black boy twirling in a dance of their own imagining on a silent empty street. In the center of the picture are two children playing with each other very closely. The white-skin, short-hair girl looks lovely. She is in a pretty checked skirt and wears a white pair of shoes. She is making dance movements with arms raising and curving, fingers spreading, a leg in the front and the other behind. Pinching the lips, she must be singing a song. Her solemn face seems to show that she is concentrating on her dancing. In contrast, the black boy is untidily dressed. His hair is curly, his clothes and shoes are
