Timeline that led to the American Civil War 2 Timeline that led to the American Civil War 1776 – Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson stated that all men are created equal. Began the right of people to alter or equal abolish, and laying down of the principle. 1787 – Northwest Ordinance Included a provision that outlawed slavery throughout the territory by Congress. Created further social and economic tensions between the North and South. 1794 – Cotton Gin Invention Eli Whitney created the Cotton Gin. Created increased value of the need for slaves in cotton producing states. 1803 - Louisiana Purchase Issues arose over whether to allow slavery to the new states in the Union. This purchase allowed the United States to expand. 1820 – The Compromise of 1820
