EML 3301C – Mechanics of Materials Laboratory Lab no. 6, Spring 2011 Tension Testing of Various Materials Objective: This lab is designed to demonstrate the use of a universal testing machine to perform tension testing of a variety of materials including steel, plastics and wood. Equipment needed: Instron universal testing machine Instron extensometer Metal tension specimens Calipers and micrometers Optical microscope Problem Statement: Determine the specific strength and specific stiffness of the materials. Assignment Notes: You will be given four materials to test with the universal testing machine. From the stress-strain response and the measurement of the mass of density of each specimen you are to find specific properties (strength/density and stiffness/density) Procedure: 1) Measure the cross section of each of the test specimens with the micrometer and calipers supplied in your tackle box. 2)
