EML 3301C – Mechanics of Materials Laboratory Lab no. 6, Spring 2011 Tension Testing of Various Materials Objective: This lab is designed to demonstrate the use of a universal testing machine to perform tension testing of a variety of materials including steel, plastics and wood. Equipment needed: Instron universal testing machine Instron extensometer Metal tension specimens Calipers and micrometers Optical microscope Problem Statement: Determine the specific strength and specific stiffness of the materials. Assignment Notes: You will be given four materials to test with the universal testing machine. From the stress-strain response and the measurement of the mass of density of each specimen you are to find specific properties (strength/density and stiffness/density) Procedure: 1) Measure the cross section of each of the test specimens with the micrometer and calipers supplied in your tackle box. 2) Weigh each sample.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
