Chapter 1 Pages 25 and 26 Summary The first study was of a Kindergarten classroom. The teacher was Rebecca Atkins and she was discussing the book “Together” with her students. The main concept of the book was about a garden and Rebecca asked several questions to help the students make connection with the bok using their own experiences of gardening. The second study was of a seventh grade life science classroom with Richard Nelms. The discussion is symmetry and Richard identifies several different types of symmetry using living things found in real life. He also has a student come up to the front of the room to be an example as well and brought a little humor into the discussion when proposing to cut his model student in half to prove he had symmetry. The third study was of a 10 th grade chemistry class. Didi Johnson is discussing Charle’s law and how temperature affects the volume of a gas. To make this lesson plan more concrete for the students, she begins by doing an experiment with the class. She puts 3 of the same balloons in three separate beakers at different temperatures. She asks the students what has happened to the balloons and while getting responses from the class she writes their observations on the board to begin her lecture and notes. After reviewing the material and notes on the board the students worked on problems using an equation from Charles’s law. The last study was of Bob Duchaine’s 11 th grade American history class. The topic war of the Vietnam War and Bob’s lesson consisted of lecturing without any class participation.

Questions 1. What type or types of knowledge did Rebecca Atkins primarily demonstrate? Explain. Rebecca Atkins demonstrated a general pedagogical knowledge. She had classroom management and involved a number of students in her lesson by questioning them about the subject matter. The students answered in an orderly matter and were all eagar to share their connections and join in on the discussion. 2. What type or types of knowledge did Richard Nelms demonstrate in his lesson? Explain. Richard Nelms demonstrated a pedagogical content knowledge because he used real life examples to help the children better understand the material and brought the abstract concept down to the students’ level. By bringing real examples o the types of symmetry, the students were able to grasp the idea better. 3. What type or types of knowledge did Didi Johnson primarily demonstrate?
