Yaunek Murray EUH 2021 Section Instructor: Reed Due Date: March 28, 2011 The Seven Seals of Marco Polo For this unit the assigned films, were of a more artistic construct; in The Adventures of Marco Polo (1938), there was definitely some production design error and some discrepancy in cast selection, at least by today’s standards. Nevertheless, its galling non display of historical accuracy did not hold the film from becoming an American classic. In The Seventh Seal (1957), it was the symbolisms and the camera angles, set during a time in Europe when death was notoriously eminent. Fortunately, the lectures and discussion sections helped give insight regarding significant symbols in the movie and how they might relate to certain economic and political relevancies of their respective production and release dates. It is important to note that both films were themed around the same historical time period; the Crusades of religion or in other words “expansion.” At the start of The Adventures of Marco Polo (1938), the viewer was informed that Marco Polo was the first European to visit China and write about it, and that he was the first traveling sales man. Like The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), this film too served as an opiate for the tumultuous era of the great depression in America. After all, though Marco Polo did travel to Asia, his writing was purely a travel log, this reveals that the movie to have been an embellishment of facts. In the section discussion it was revealed that Marco Polo did not report an adventure but rather a simple journal of what he saw and where it was seen. History tells us that The Travels of Marco Polo , the novel from which the movie is based, was written by Rustichello da Pisa; the story being conceived during the Venetian and Genoese war over the Black Sea Trade Routes. It appeared to be fate that the great explorer would be captured at war only to share a cell with a famous romance writer.
