An agent is an entity that perceives and acts in an environment. A rational agent is an agent that "does the right thing"; it attempts to "be successful" by taking appropriate actions. An ideal rational agent takes whatever actions maximize its performance. For animals, the measure of performance is survival of the individual, if not the entire species. How should an agent act?
