A string of pearls Tony Dajer Q2 . What symptoms would Mrs. Fratelli have experienced if she had not been diabetic? How did her diabetes mask the symptoms? Mrs. Fratelli suffered from urinary infection that led to sepsis, common signs of bladder infection if patient not diabetic are: Frequent urination along with the feeling of having to urinate even though there may be very little urine to pass. Nausea and vomiting. Nocturia : Need to urinate during the night. Urethritis : Discomfort or pain at the urethral meatus or a burning sensation throughout the urethra with urination ( dysuria ). Pain in the midline suprapubic region. Pyuria : Pus in the urine or discharge from the urethra. Hematuria : Blood in urine. Pyrexia : Mild fever and chills. Cloudy and foul-smelling urine Some urinary tract infections are asymptomatic . Protein found in the urine. Mrs. Fratelli only suffered from vomiting, fever(high temperature), because diabetics patients can suffer from nerve damage from their high glucose levels, thus they may not experience the discomfort during urination that is the most common sign of bladder infection. Plus poly urea is a sign of bladder infection, but its also related to her being diabetic (causes frequent urination as well) that’s why it wasn’t marked as a problem in her case. Q3. Why are white blood cells in the urine a sign of infection? White blood cells (leukocytes) are an important part of the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign substances (immune system). To defend the body adequately, a sufficient number of white blood cells must receive a message that an infectious organism or foreign substance has invaded the body, get to where they are needed, and then kill and digest the harmful organism or substance.
