Race (cultural myth) is physical differences categorized by culture. Race is a cultural myth, something seen as natural Race isn’t biological, but it is REAL. Race is: Cultural category Not a biological reality from scientific classification Effects all Franc Boas: Physical traits indexed different psychological, social ability “Scientific racism” Boas rejected the scientific racism No way they could work Physiologically we are all the same Boas rejected scientific approach: systematic *Intro to the American Indian languages Empirical studies did not support classification No link between culture, language, appearance and race Brazil: Racial categories, many on physical appearance Fluidity and flux on how people identify themselves
