College of Engineering 09-10 One-Time ETF Proposals 1. Replace Shared Lab Equipment Due to Relocation of BME to EBIII. Amount: $92,557 Biomedical Engineering grew out of the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department. It became a separate department in 2003. Through an agreement arranged by the provost, BAE and BME continued to share teaching labs. With the imminent move of BME to EBIII and the rapid increase of enrollment in BAE, the agreement to share teaching space will not be kept in place. BME is expected to establish separate teaching labs. The equipment listed in the attached spreadsheet is necessary to fully equip the BME teaching labs. These labs include the Physiology Lab, Bioinstrumentation Lab, Senior Design Lab, Biomechanics Lab, and Student Machine Shop. Anticipating this move, BME has invested more than $288,865 in department and ETF funds for the past 4 years in the acquisition of equipment to establish independent student labs. This request is to complete the upfit of these labs as the department relocates to Centennial Campus. Physiology Lab The Physiology Lab is specialized to allow students to make measurements from living systems and to conduct dissections. It is used by the following courses. Students use the biomechanics lab to study the properties of bones, cartilage and ligaments, for gait analysis, in addition to measuring material properties.
