Unit 5 Project 2 Unit 5 Project: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 is an amendment made to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The act makes it illegal for an employer to deny an applicant employment with the firm because she is pregnant, has a condition related to pregnancy, or because of ill-informed opinions held by management, other employees, or customers of the firm. An employer cannot determine an applicant’s or employee’s ability to work based on the condition, and any ability to perform the job must be treated the same as they would treat an employee for any other temporary disability and must be allowed to work as long as they are capable and their job must be held open for the same amount of time they would hold a position open for anyone else on leave for a medical reason or disability. Insurance benefits provided must cover pregnancy related expenses, and they cannot be limited to married employees. Also treatment in regards to the crediting of seniority, vacation calculation, pay increases, and temporary disability benefits must be the same as any other employee with a temporary disability, (The U.S. Equal, 2008).
