2 Mary Kay Does Leadership the Right Way Written by Alan Farnham (1993), “Mary Kay’s Lessons in Leadership” is an article which discusses the leadership style of Mary Kay cosmetics company. Began in 1963 by Mary Kay Ash and her son, Richard Rogers, the Mary Kay company has grown from sales of $198,000 to over $613 million per year. Farnham (1993) writes, “It has built a sales force of 300,000, of whom more than 6,500 are driving complimentary Cadillacs and other cars worth over $90 million. It has created 74 ``millionaires'' (women who have earned commissions of $1 million or more over the course of their careers). And it hasn't done too badly by the Ashes, whose fortune Texas Monthly puts at $320 million.” (Farnham, 1993, para 3).
