COPING STYLES AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PREPARATION 2 Coping Styles and Psychological Preparation Case A Gerry appears to use vigilance or attention strategies. Seeking information, and not avoiding the problem, is what he is doing. I classify this as his strategy because he went to a physician immediately upon noticing his symptoms. He demonstrated his concern and actively went for help. Forcing an appointment into his crammed schedule shows that he is controlling the issue and not avoiding it. For Gerry the best preparations methods are informational control. Once he has information about his situation, some of his stress will be relieved.

Unformatted text preview: It is better for Gerry that he is informed about what to expect, due to the recent tragedy involving his father-in-law. Knowledge about procedures and potential outcomes is more likely to lessen the stress and fear that Gerry has. I also believe that Gerry employs the cognitive control method already without telling his wife, if it has been a few days. I believe he has not told her because I believe she would notice a problem if he was unable to control his anxieties. Simultaneously, his history thanks to his father-in-law can cause him increased stress and demonstrate a need for cognitive control. However, I believe that the most beneficial approach is the informational approach....
