TORQUE EQUILIBRIUM OBJECT To study the second condition of equilibrium, namely, equilibrium of an extended, rigid body with respect to rotation. APPARATUS Parallel force apparatus, consisting of support base, unbalanced meterstick, assorted hooked weights, balanced holders and meterstick weight hangers, double pan balance with weight set. THEORY The torque, or moment of force, is a measure of the tendency of that force to produce rotation. Torque is defined as the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of the force. In a standard right-hand coordinate system, counterclockwise moments are positive and clockwise moments are negative. If several forces act on an extended, rigid body; and, as a net result of the action of all forces, the body is in equilibrium with respect to both translation and rotation, then the net force acting on the body must be zero and the net torque must also be zero. Stated mathematically: ( 1 a ) Σ F x 0 ( 1 b ) Σ F y 0 ( 2 ) Σ T 0 o These are called the first and second conditions of equilibrium. If a single extended rigid body is in equilibrium about an axis, then its weight acts along a line through its center of gravity.
