2Running head: THINKERSAbstractWithin this paper, there will be a comparison of educational figures from the eras of Modernity and Enlightenment. Those famous thinkers are Horace Mann of the Modernity and Jean Jacques Rousseau of the Enlightenment era. Both thinkers are considered instrumental in the development of the educational system. Each one thinker dedicated their lives to improving education and the overall way of life. Horace Mann was a philosopher who believed that the US had a moral mission to play in the world of education (Gutek, 2011). He developed the concept of civic education in which people put aside their particular interest for the common good. Mr. Mann provided the notion that teaching needs professionalization, and because of his efforts, teaching became a career. Jean-Jacques Rousseau caused a revolution in education and the thinking practice. The Modernity Era was associated with scientific explanations, the decline of religious worldview, and individual subjectivity ( Snyder, 2016). The Enlightenment Era was an intellectual movement concerning God, the celebration of reason, and the power by which people understand the universe and improve their life.Keywords: early childhood education. eras, educational thinkers, modernity, enlightenment
