Paulo Freire was best known for his work about oppression and what it means to be a human. Freire’s educational philosophy of liberation brought literacy to impoverished and illiterate people. His theory influenced educational and social movements throughout the world. Freire had a deep love and humility for poor and repressed people. The philosopher developed his liberation pedagogy as a result of his work with improving illiterate people. He taught people how to read and write as well as encouraging them to develop a social conscience about individual living conditions (Gutek 2011). The process of developing a critical awareness of one’s social reality through reflection and action. Action is fundamental because it is the process of changing reality. Paulo Freire says that we all acquire social myths that have a dominant tendency, and so learning is a critical process that depends upon uncovering real problems and actual needs.
