18:00 Nature vs Nurture What’s the question? What causes homosexuality o This is a question about development of individuals o What combination of genes, fetal environments, nutrition, peer  experiences…led to the phenotype we see? o These interactions may be pre-preprogrammed (e.g. suntanning) o Nature/Nurture is misleading What explains individuals differences in sexual orientation? o This is a question about variation in a population o People differ in both the genes they carry and in the environments they  have experienced. o Nature/Nurture has a special, and limited, meaning Baking Analogy Nature: ingredients Nurture: techniques, temperatures Why does it taste this way? o Can’t logically parse ingredients and techniques. Interaction What explains differences? o Can partition the variance. How much variance is due to each? We can “partition the variance” How much of the phenotypic difference between individuals: Is due to the fact that they have different genes? And how much is due to the fact that they have different experiences?
