Intro to Cinema April 18 Visual Effects Special/Visual Effects -Special effects -Describes the analog era of cinema -'tricks' supplementing live action cinematography -Created in post-production -today special effects only refers to physical practical mechanical effects ex. Car explosion/wreck -Visual effects -Digital tools make visual effects co-extensive throughout all of cinema. -Not just at post-production. -Involves everything but car explosions/wrecks etc. .. -A Trip to the Moon (George Melies, 1902) -All Visual Effects shots are composited images ex. Shutter Island -Optical compositing -The optical printer (machine that layered all the photos for compositing) - an interlocked camera and projector -Photographing and re-photographing a series of image layers -Composite layers are selectively matted (need to block certain lights) -Digital compositing -Transforming pixels according to 'operators' - add, multiply, subtract, etc. .. -Traveling mattes -male and female - enable compositing of moving subject against a
