Burkholder and King (2006) 1- Early symphonies, 1757-67 Haydn’s earliest symphonies were typically in 3 movements, scored for strings and pairs of oboes and horn, and had themes made of elements that were easily broken up and recombined. For his early Esterházy symphonies, handy sought novelty and variety. 2-Symphonies of 1768-72 Beginning about 1768, Haydn treated the symphony as a serious work that was longer, had greater extremes in dynamic level, a richer harmonic palette, wider ranging modulations, and more contrapuntal textures than his previous symphonies.
