1 Problem Set 6 Chem 3900: Physical Chemistry II Spring 2011 Due: Class, Friday, Mar 11 th Please make sure to write your name and the recitation you’ll attend. This problem set (except for the last 2 problems) examines the change in entropy for following reaction: 22 11 () Hg B rg H B rg  We will compare ∆ܵ calculated from both thermodynamic and spectroscopic data. Problem 1. Entropy from thermodynamic data. i) Use data from Table 21.2 to determine ܵ ሺ298ܭሻ for the above reaction. ii) At room temperature and pressure, the most stable phase of bromine is the liquid. Repeat the calculation for the reaction, H g Br l HBr g . Give a molecular explanation of the difference in ܵ ሺ298ܭሻ . iii) Calculate ܵ ሺ298ܭሻ at an applied pressure of 5.0 bar for B B .
