Yaunek Murray Period 1 Psych Key terms ch.3 Chromosomes- threadlike structures made of DNA molecules containing the genes. DNA- The abbreviation stands for deoxyribonucleic acid , a double-stranded nucleic acid, in which the two strands twist together to form a helix. Genes- a hereditary unit consisting of a sequence of DNA that occupies a specific location on a chromosome and determines a particular characteristic in an organism. Genome- total genetic content contained in a haploid set of chromosomes in eukaryotes, in a single chromosome in bacteria, or in the DNA or RNA of viruses. Natural selection- process in nature by which, according to Darwin's theory of evolution, only the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and transmit their genetic characteristics in increasing numbers to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated. Mutation- change of the DNA sequence within a gene or chromosome of an organism resulting in the creation of a new character or trait not found in the parental type.
