Yaunek Murray Period 1 Key Terms Chapter 1 1. hindsight bias- is the reoccurring human convention that they knew it all along. Saying something is common sense after they have seen the outcome. 2. hypothesis- an educated guess for the outcome of an experiment. 3. operational definition- a showing of something—such as a variable, term, or object—in terms of the specific process or set of validation tests used to determine its presence and quantity. 4. population- the set of individuals, items, or data from which a statistical sample is taken. 5. correlation coefficient- a measure of the interdependence of two random variables that ranges in value from −1 to +1, indicating perfect negative correlation at −1, absence of correlation at zero, and perfect positive correlation at +1. 6. experiment- a test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth, examine the validity of a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy of something previously untried. 7. experimental condition- the procedure that is varied in order to estimate a variable's effect by comparison with a control condition. 8. independent variable- a manipulated variable in an experiment or study whose presence or degree determines the change in the dependent variable. 9.
