Sociology of Race 19:06 Race is a social construct that changes over time and people that used to be in a  race are no longer a race (i.e. Irish and Jewish are no longer races) Race is also historically constructed not just biologically and socially constructed Social Darwinism and Eugenics: Social Darwinism - another nineteenth century theory, was the notion that  some groups or races evolved more than others and were better fit to survive  and even rule other races Eugenics - based on naïve interpretation of heredity and ethnocentric ideas of  northern European/white superiority, claimed the right to influence human  breeding for “positive” traits and against “negative” traits Herbert Spencer was an early sociologist and social Darwinist W.E.B. Du Bois Founding sociologist, historian, philosopher, political activist Organized NAACP (1911)
