Chicano Studies Review 05:26 Epi-Olmec Writing: Nine known epi-Olmec texts found in the 20 th  century o Of the nine, the most well known one is the famous stela La Mojarra; The  stela depicts an epi-Olmec warrior-king. Its text, as they read it, provides a  lengthy description of his rise to kingship thru several years of warfare and  ritual activity o The first epi-Olmec text to be found was the Tuxtla Statuette; the statuette  describes the ritual activities of a probable shaman, and its text ends with  him calling up his animal spirit companion. The statuette appears to depict  this or his impersonation of this companion, for it shows a human being in  the guise of an animal, wearing a duckbill mask and a cape of bird wings  and claws. The statuette postdates the stela by less than 3 years. The  rites described on the statuette were preformed on the 6 th  anniversary of  the ruler’s last recorded battle before accession Keys to decipherment: The discovery of a lengthy text in the script
