Unformatted text preview: Rachel Schwarz 15 March 2011 “If the Heart Is Lean” “If the Heart Is Lean” details the story of a small town female protagonist told in first person. The piece has an emotional and reminiscent tone. The protagonist has recently suffered the loss of her father; which reflects her lack of a social life. The speaker is most likely suffering from some form of depression. It is only because of a woman Alice that the protagonist attends any social events. In addition, the speaker clings to a married man named Larry. As an effect of Larry’s recent death from a heart attack, the protagonist recollects stories and experiences she shared with her deceased lover. As infatuated as the protagonist was with Larry, members of her inner circle deemed the relationship as unhealthy. Budroe, a friend of the protagonist’s, admits, “Everybody-we just assumed you’d go to college. Then Larry turned up and it was like you were glued to the floor. We didn’t know what to say” (144).
