11/3/10 Communication and Relationships Relationship Development -“When Harry Met Sally” –Examples him talking about how the relationship was crazy they hated each other at first then liked each other then got married Stage Model -Stages of relationship development: 1.Initiation -Be perceived properly -See what the other person is like -Decision if the person is their type 2.Exploration -determine possibilities for development through small talk 3.Intensification -Develop rituals and rules of relationship (mostly not . .) -Both parties decide if they want to move on. 4.Formalization -making it formal to public -facebook example: when people formalize their relationships on facebook -getting engaged or marriage 5.Redefinition -Must be able to grow within the relationship 6.Deterioration -Relationship falls apart -self talk -interpersonal communication -group dressing- getting ready for the relationship to end It is a linear one way process but can have setbacks What drives stages: communication
