Chapter 9 - White vs. Black o White: light that contains an equal mixture of all wavelengths o Black: absence of light - Cones (3 types) o Red – sensitive to longer wavelengths o Green – reacts to spectral midrange o Blue – end of spectrum - Color Models o RYB – in addition to black and white, can create all other colors o RGB – Additive color Mixing two colors results in a brighter color Color TV Hardware oriented o CMYK – subtractive color Mixing two colors results in a darker color Used in printers o HSB Hue – the color name, displayed in circular color wheel Numeric values given in degrees Saturation – purity of a color Numeric values given in percentages Brightness – where on a scale a color falls between white and black Numeric values given in percentages As brightness decreases, small range in saturation, hues become more compressed System goal to describe colors more easily

- Color Harmony Schemes o Monochromatic – all colors have hues that are exactly the same (constant hue) o Complementary – pair of hues (colors opposite to each other on color wheel) o Analogous – Two or more colors whose hues lie close together on color wheel o Triadic – any three colors spaced equally around color wheel - Avoid text and background colors that differ only in blue RGB values. Chapter 10 - Serif vs. Sans Serif o Serif: decorative line, circle at the end of a stroke in a letter o Sans Serif: lack of the above - Baseline – imaginary line on which most letters appear to rest - Midline – imaginary line that runs along the tops of most lowercase letters - X-height – vertical distance between baseline and midline - Ascender – portion of some letters that extend above midline
