INTRODUCTION Osmosis is “the movement of water molecules across a selectively-permeable membrane down a water potential gradient.” 1 In this lab we examine this process of how much water flows through a membrane by using water, molasses, dialysis tubing (to simulate a cell membrane), varying temperatures and changes in weight of each tube. We hypothesized that the greater the concentration of molasses in the tube, the more water the sample will absorb through osmosis. Therefore we predicted that the tube filled completely with molasses will absorb the most amount of water. METHODS We pretty much follow the lab directions from Part 1 of the lab, instead incorporating our own measures of solutions for our own design in Part 2. In example, instead of using 4 pipets (for the max) for a bag in Part 1, we use measurements of 3 pipets for Part 2. 1.
